San Diego State impressive in Wooden opener


FULLERTON, Calif., November 23, 2017 – San Diego State cruised to an 89-52 victory over Sacramento State in the final game on day one of The Wooden Legacy.

SDSU spread their scoring out with four players reaching double-figures. Junior Devin Watson led the way with 12 points. Senior Trey Kell and freshman Matt Mitchell both put up 11 points while junior Jeremy Hemsley contributed 10 points. Redshirt freshman Jalen McDaniels dominated the glass pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Senior Justin Strings was the only Hornet to reach double-figures with 10 points and led the team with seven rebounds. Junior Kevin Hicks was second on the team with eight points while junior Jeff Wu put up seven points.

It was all Aztecs from the start as they opened up the game on a 12-0 scoring run and the lead only grew from there. Watson led the way scoring all 12 of his points in the first half. By halftime, the game was blown wide open as San Diego State was out in front 49-14.

The second half started off the same with complete domination by SDSU as the lead reached as high as 47 points for the Aztecs. But the Hornets did come out of halftime a different team though as they were holding their own on the offensive end scoring 38 points for the half, but their defense had no answer for the Aztecs and SDSU cruised to victory.
