Seven of the eight schools scheduled to participate in the 2017 Wooden Legacy, an in-season collegiate basketball tournament, will be competing this week in conference events starting Wednesday with Saint Joseph’s in the Atlantic 10 championships, San Diego State in the Mountain West conclave and Washington State in the Pac-12 playoffs.
The 2017 Wooden Legacy will be played at two sites in southern California November 23, 24, and 26. Cal State Fullerton will host the first two days of the 2017 Wooden Legacy on its campus at Titan Gym November 23 and 24. The placement games will be played November 26 at Honda Center in Anaheim.
Seeded 13th in the Atlantic 10 finale in Pittsburgh, Saint Joseph’s (11-19) will play Massachusetts Wednesday with the winner of that game meeting St. Bonaventure Thursday. The finals will be televised on CBS Sports as part of their annual Selection Sunday coverage.
The Hawks, who dropped both league games this season to UMass, have captured the Atlantic 10 title in the past two of three years (2014, 2016). However, Saint Joseph’s has been plagued this season by injuries, including those to their top two scoring guards, Shavar Newkirk and Lamarr Kimble.
With the Mountain West being played in Las Vegas, sixth-seeded San Diego State (17-13) faces home-standing UNLV as the Aztecs seek their third win this season over the Rebels. The San Diego State/UNLV victor plays Boise State in the quarter-finals Thursday with the MW finals being televised Saturday by CBS Sports.
San Diego State, which has defeated UNLV twice this season, captured the 2013 Wooden Legacy title as coach Steve Fisher’s Aztecs defeated College of Charleston and Creighton at Titan Gym before posting a 67-59 win over Marquette in the finale at Honda Center.
Tenth-seeded Washington State (13-17) will play Colorado in Las Vegas with the winner advancing to Thursday’s quarter-finals opposite Arizona. Washington State and Colorado split a pair of league games this winter with each school winning at home. The Pac-12 finals will be televised Saturday by ESPN.
UCLA, the reigning Wooden Legacy champions after defeating Texas A&M in last November title game at Honda Center, is also competing in the Pac-12 tournament this week with the Bruins playing either USC or Washington Thursday in the quarter-finals.
The only 2017 Wooden Legacy not playing at the end of this week is Saint Mary’s (28-4) as the Gaels concluded conference action by winning two of three games in the West Coast tournament. Saint Mary’s dropped the WCC finale Tuesday to Gonzaga 74-56. Three of the Gaels four setbacks this season have been to Gonzaga with the fourth defeat to Texas-Arlington, the Sun Belt regular-season champion.
Here is the schedule for the other five schools competing in the 2017 Wooden Legacy.
- DePaul (9-22) opens Big East play in New York as the 10th-seeded Blue Demons challenge Xavier Thursday. It is the third meeting this season between the two teams with Xavier winning twice. Second-seeded Butler plays the DePaul/Xavier winner. The Big East finals will be played Saturday and televised by FOX.
- Cal State Fullerton (16-13) begins Big West Thursday action in Anaheim as the third-seeded Titans play CSUN. The two teams split a pair of league games this season with each winning as visitors. The finals will be aired Saturday by ESPN2.
- Harvard (18-9) will play in the first-ever Ivy League post-season tournament starting Friday at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The second-seeded Crimson seek their third win of the season over Yale Friday with the winner of the game meeting the Princeton/Penn victor Saturday in a game televised by ESPN2.
- Eighth-seeded Georgia (18-13) meets ninth-seeded Tennessee in the Southeastern championships Thursday in Birmingham as the Bulldogs won the only game between the two schools this season. The Georgia/Tennessee winner plays top-seeded Kentucky in the quarter-finals Friday with the championship game being televised Sunday by CBS.
