Local Community Leaders Join Together to Raise Money for Coaches vs. Cancer
HONOLULU – December 2, 2022
Local community leaders are once again uniting with the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic tournament coaches to battle cancer right here in Hawai‘i.
As part of Coaches vs. Cancer, some of collegiate basketball’s top coaches have joined forces with some of Hawaii’s best-loved organizations to help raise funds to benefit the Clarence T.C. Ching Hope Lodge.
The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge program provides a free home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers. More than just a roof over their heads, it’s a nurturing community that helps patients access the care they need. The American Cancer Society Clarence T.C. Ching Hope Lodge in Honolulu offers guest rooms located near treatment centers in the area and provides an invaluable resource for neighbor island families receiving treatment in Honolulu.
For the fifth year, basketball fans and the public are invited to:
• Come out and support Coaches vs. Cancer
• Talk story with University of Hawai.i Men’s Basketball Head Coach Eran Ganot and other participating coaches and announcers from the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic tournament
• Bid in a special silent auction
• Be a part of a special live ESPN Honolulu “Coaches vs Cancer Radio Show”
• All while enjoying a lively pau hana at the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort’s Kani Ka Pila Grille
The event is a very special one for Ganot who helped launch it nearly a half dozen years ago as a member of the Coaches vs. Cancer national council. “This fundraiser is an event that I look forward to each year and one that I hold very dear to my heart,” Ganot said. “The Hope Lodge is such a vital resource to our Hawai‘i community in the battle against cancer. I’m grateful for the turnout of people in supporting such an important cause and am thrilled to see how much it’s grown over the years. I extend a huge mahalo to ESPN Events, Outrigger Resorts & Hotels, and all the fantastic local organizations who have helped make all this possible.”
“It’s inspiring to see competitive coaches unite as one to win the battle against cancer – the Outrigger team is honored to be the host venue of Coaches vs. Cancer for the last five years and help show our community that they are not alone in this fight, said Sean Dee, EVP and chief commercial officer for Outrigger Resorts & Hotels.
“Hawaii’s business community’s support continues to grow,” said Daryl Garvin, Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic executive director. “We’d like to extend a special mahalo to Coca-Cola Hawai.i, ESPN Honolulu, Hawaiian Airlines, Hawai.i Pacific Health, Island Energy Services, Matson Foundation, Outrigger Resorts & Hotels, Polynesian Adventure Tours, and Texaco in Hawai‘i for helping to raise awareness and funds for Coaches vs. Cancer.”
Since 2017, the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic and supporters have raised more than $55,000.00 for the Clarence T.C. Ching, Hope Lodge Hawai.i.
