Tickets for the 2014 Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic On Sale Now; Women’s Classic Tickets Available Oct. 23

Annual Events Part of Jimmy V Week which Benefits The V Foundation for Cancer Research; Games to be Televised on ESPN

Tickets for the 20th edition of the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic Presented by Corona, to be played at Madison Square Garden in New York City are now on sale, while tickets to the 13th annual Jimmy V Women’s Basketball Classic Presented by Corona, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, will be available for purchase on Thursday, Oct. 23.

The women’s game will played on Saturday, Dec. 6, and the men’s games are set for Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Classics will showcase top college basketball programs on ESPN during the eighth-annual Jimmy V Week, an initiative taking place Dec. 3-9 across multiple ESPN platforms and programs featuring special content to help raise funds for cancer research. In seven years, Jimmy V Week has generated $8,246,000 in total contributions for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, including a record-setting number of $1,827,000 in 2013.

Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic

The men’s doubleheader, held at the famed Madison Square Garden for the 12th consecutive year, will tip off with Illinois facing Villanova at 7 p.m. ET, followed by Indiana against Louisville at 9 p.m., both on ESPN. The Illinois-Villanova series dates back to 1938 with the two teams meeting six total times, each winning three. Villanova has captured the last two meetings, most recently a 66-63 victory in the 1988 NCAA Championship quarterfinal round. Villanova will play in its third Jimmy V Classic, losing the previous two games: 67-58 to Texas in 2008 and 81-71 to Missouri in 2011. Illinois faced Providence in the 2003 Jimmy V Classic, falling 70-51.

In the second of the two games, Indiana holds a 10-6 record over Louisville, but lost the last meeting between the teams in 2003. Indiana has won its previous two Jimmy V Classic games, defeating North Carolina 82-73 in 1999 and Pittsburgh 64-54 in 2009. Louisville, making its Atlantic Coast Conference debut next season, will play in its second Jimmy V Classic after losing to Arizona 72-65 in 2006.

Jimmy V Women’s Basketball Classic

The 2014 event will showcase a rematch of the 2014 National Championship, as defending national champion Connecticut takes on Notre Dame at 3:15 p.m. on ESPN. The 13th annual women’s game will be played in Norte Dame, Ind., at Purcell Pavilion. Before the 2013-2014 season the Huskies and Fighting Irish have faced-off four times in each of the last three years when combining regular-season games with postseason contests, and on average played 2.3 times annually during the 18-year series.
