What is the Jimmy V Classic?

The two early-season events that showcase top college basketball programs on ESPN will conclude  Jimmy V Week, a week-long initiative across multiple ESPN platforms and programs featuring special content to help raise funds for cancer research.

The 2018 Men’s Jimmy V Classic will be played on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden. West Virginia will play Florida in a matchup featuring two teams that made the Sweet 16 in last year’s NCAA Tournament, while Notre Dame and Oklahoma will square off on the hardwood for the first time ever.

The 2018 Women’s Jimmy V Classic matchup will be played on Sunday, Dec. 2 on Notre Dame’s iconic campus in South Bend, Indiana where the Fighting Irish, on a journey to defend their national title, square off with powerhouse UConn in a 2017 Final Four rematch.

What is the The V Foundation, and what is its mission?

The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Since 1993, The Foundation has raised more than $130 million to fund cancer research grants nationwide. It awards 100 percent of all direct cash donations and net proceeds of events directly to cancer research and related programs. Administrative and fundraising expenses are paid by the Foundation’s endowment. The Foundation awards grants through a competitive awards process strictly supervised by a Scientific Advisory Committee.
