Griffin pours in 26 points to lead Wyoming past Furman 78-71
CONWAY, S.C. (Nov. 19, 2023) – Sam Griffin and Wyoming won the scoring duel with Marcus Foster and Furman, as the Cowboys built a 17-point lead early in the second half and held on for a 78-71 victory in the final round of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.
Griffin scored 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting for a total of 65 points over the three MBI games this season. Griffin also played in the 2022 MBI when he was with Tulsa and scored a total of 52 points in that tournament, giving him 117 career points in six MBI games at the HTC Center.
“If I knew he played that well in this gym, I would have tried to get Coastal Carolina on a home-and-home and played them here twice,” Wyoming coach Jeff Linder said. “I’m happy for him. He’s in the gym every morning. He loves basketball.”
Foster, meanwhile, scored 18 points to give him 78 for the three-game tournament, breaking the MBI record of 75 set by Khalil Ahmad with Cal State Fullerton in 2018. Both Foster and Griffin made this year’s MBI All-Tournament team.
“His commitment to his work ethic in the offseason was tremendous,” Furman coach Bob Richey said of Foster. “To work the way he did and then come out and play the way he’s been playing shows that investment equals return.”
