Ohio’s Clayton record-breaking Mrytle Beach Invitational effort spurs Bobcat win

Ohio 85, Portland 73 – Ohio senior forward AJ Clayton tied a Myrtle Beach Invitational single-game record with 13 made field goals to help lead the Bobcats past Portland. In scoring the second most points in a tournament game with 34, Clayton made six 3-pointers and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Cal State Fullerton’s Khalil Ahmad set the MBI scoring mark in 2018 in a game against Monmouth when he made 13 field goals.  Utah State’s Justin Beach has 33 points in a 2021 double overtime win versus Penn when he made 13 field goals in the contests.  Clayton’s 26 field goal attempts, including 14 three-point tries, also set MBI single-game marks.
Junior guard Jackson Paveletzke had ten assists, giving him 21 for the tournament, one short of the MBI record with still a game to play.  Villanova’s Collin Gillespie had 22 assists in three games in the 2019 MBI.  Paveletzke had 11 assists in Ohio’s opening game Thursday in an 83-81 setback to Middle Tennessee.
The Bobcats roared out to a 28-10 lead and maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the game. Portland closed the gap to eight points at 57-49 with 11 minutes to play, but Ohio answered with a 13-2 run in barely two minutes to build a 70-51 lead.
